Many of North Carolina's western counties saw relief from the drought over the past week, according to government drought map released today.
Thanks to last week's rains, nearly half of North Carolina's 100 counties are now classified as being in a "moderate" drought. Only 19 counties, all in western North Carolina, are still classified as having "extreme" drought conditions, the worst category.
Triangle counties all remained in moderate drought category. RDU International Airport reported 32.9 inches of rain this year as of 8 p.m. Wednesday. That's nearly three inches over the average, but the region is still replenishing deficits from last year.
Tropical Storm Hanna may help. Forecasters are predicting up to two inches of rain in the Triangle, and more further east.
