ANNOUNCEMENT
TITLE: Extension
Associate Horticulture
LOCATION: Position will be housed at NC A&T State
University in Greensboro, North Carolina
SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and
experience. (12 month, non-tenure track position)

AVAILABLE: Initial
screening of applicant credentials will begin on July 1, 2009. A
search
committee will review all applications and associated materials,
interview
candidates, and recommend the most suitable individuals for the
position.
Selected candidates will be asked to interview on campus in Greensboro,
NC;
travel expenses associated with the interview will be reimbursed
according to
NC A&T State University policy. The position is expected to be
filled
by September 1, 2009.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Extension Associate will coordinate
educational programs related to production of horticultural crops
marketed
through community-based food systems. Specific responsibilities of the
Associate include the following:

Develop
proposals and secure extramural funding for
Extension Horticultural programs that address the needs and learning
behaviors
of beginning, small-scale, and limited resource growers;
·
Assist
both established agricultural producers and
beginning farmers in developing market-driven, systems-integrated, and
sustainable specialty crop and/or alternative enterprises that are
appropriate
for community-based food systems;
·
Assist
local government and community-based agencies
and concerned individuals in the development of programs such as
community
gardening that address food security issues in low-income communities;
·
Participate
in training programs for Extension field
faculty and community stakeholders that focus on sustainable
agriculture,
specialty crops (including organic and nursery enterprises) and food
security
and safety issues;
·
Establish
and maintain strategic partnerships with
professional peers, organizations, institutions, and other agencies to
produce
innovative techniques that encourage users to adopt and/or implement
system
approaches for solving problems; and
·
Participate
as a team member for other major Extension
initiatives described in the Strategic Plan for Cooperative Extension.
QUALIFICATIONS: Position requires a Masters degree in one
of
the following fields of study: Horticultural Science, Crop Science,
Agronomy, or a closely-related agricultural science such as
Agroecology.
A successful candidate must have expertise and experience in plant
production
systems (including, but not limited to, soil, water, crop and pest
management)
and must demonstrate skills in providing appropriate technical support
to
external audiences. Potential candidates must be able to effectively
convey information in written and oral forms to limited resource
audiences as
well as other stakeholders. Candidates must also demonstrate evidence
of
their ability to travel, work flexible hours (including evenings and
weekends,
as required to fulfill assigned responsibilities), manage time and
resources,
and work cooperatively as a team member.
